I have to admit that this summer of recording has been quite a disappointment for me.
Both June and July were cold, wet and windy wherever I went. So I can’t say that I’ve managed to record a interesting recording since the beginning of June when I first started traveling around the country to record.
At the same time, I’ve been struggling with all sorts of strange „ghosts“ due to equipment malfunctions.
I have two Tascam FR-AV2 devices. The one of them went to Germany for warranty repair because it drew too much current while recording. It also drew too much current after the device was turned off. In addition, it couldn’t run on AA batteries either.
It just arrives now three months later when I was writing this post.
The other FR-AV2 device that I’ve been using a lot this summer has also been behaving strangely, which is actually becoming apparent now while working on this blog post. I was starting to think that this is related to the AT4022 microphones that I use most often when the weather is very wet and I can expect the microphone to be destroyed due to weather condition.
But now it can also be heard in this recording where the MKH20s were used. I’m still not sure if it could be related to the mic cables, XLR connectors, microphones, or because the Tascam preamps overloads in some subsonic frequencies.
Unfortunately, I used Tascam devices a lot this summer because it was most convenient to record on two channels with omni microphones in AB due to the weather, plus I have made a weather tight box for the Tascam recorders.
Added to this, rather big and newly out of warranty Power Bank for the recorders stop working and after a OS update on my DAW, the Izotope RX11 stopped working. My life in the audio world is therefore rather problematic at the moment.
Here is a recording that was recorded in the middle of the highlands of Iceland at Sprengisandur, in heavy wind and fog, 24th of July 2026.
You can clearly hear throughout the recording that something is wrong, mainly the left channel and sometimes on right channel. The recording will therefore be very short this time.
