Hi there,
Atmospheric recording, I really like it when the hail storm increases in intensity.
I see that you bought a pair of NT1-A’s, are you satisfied with them?
What kind of rig do you use for your NOS-setup?
Yes, I decided to buy a pair after I heard your last forest recording 🙂 I am always try to record a quiet things so I need really quiet mics. The noise in Sennheiser ME mics are to much for me
About the rig. To be honest, at the moment I use almost the same Rig as you . A small tripod and a short T-bar. For windshield I use Rode WS2.
I was thinking to make a windshield from a fleece wind stopper because WS2 does not work perfectly well.
If Rode NT1a will sounds much better than NT2a in MS setup. I will fix a shoe for NT1 in Blimp. https://picasaweb.google.com/fieldrecording.net/MSSetupMidSideRecording#
I see it now that I’ve written 90 ° / 30mm but of course it is 90 ° / 30cm. I corrected it hereby.
DIY is always fun and probably a must if recording in the field with the NT1-A’s so i’d love to hear about your progress with the fleece covers as well as the MS-rig. But don’t you need a figure-8 mic to record MS?
Yes that’s right Magnus. You always need Fig.8 mic for MS.

If you own shot gun, hyper cardioid and omny to use as a mid-mic you have wide choice of mic setup to fit in one Blimp. I own Sound Devices 302 mixer with MS mode, so I do not need to work with MS in computer afterward. But some people do because then they have more control on the stereo image afterward.
Biggest drawback is the price of good sounding and quiet Fig.8 mics (as MKH30). Therefore have I fix Rode NT2a (fig.8, side mic) in a Blimp.

I have not spent much time to record with this setup. The biggest drawback to use ME 62, 64 and 66 as a mid-mic is the noise, compare to NT2a. I think I will end up with Rode NTG3 in the future, probably next month.
Hi Magnus,
I couldn’t help noticing that you have a Sound Devices 552 – is that instead of or as well as the 344???
Would love to hear more about the 552 and its performance.
Des
This looks stupid Des. It was my plan to get 744 (even 788), but because of high customs duties, nearly 100% on sound recorder, I still have not purchased it yet.
It is however only 35% on the mixer. Therefore, I ended up with 552. There are several reasons for this decision. High Gain and lot of nice futures and flexibilities that can be useful even I purchased a real recorder.
The recorder itself is quiet good.
Probably this website describe 552 best as a recorder:
http://www.sounddevices.com/notes/general/552-or-7-series/
But just at the moment I have some problem with some high frequency sound (about 14Khz) in the mixer, when I use internal power supply.
Something for me to investigate next days.
Nice moment in time – it must be a welcome sound to hear a spring storm breaking through the memory of an Icelandic winter.
Uff, hopefully I do not need to spend more time recording hailstorms, cold wind and rain.
Birds and plants are waiting for the spring.
Just discovering your site today and I loved the hail storm sound. Il’be back 🙂
Always welcome.
But no more hail storm.
The SUMMER will arrive next weekend to Iceland 🙂
A summer sound recording ? Will love to discover that, there is so much to be recorded and listened to.
Well…
„Summer sound recording“ The weather forecast talk about sunny weather and +17°C this weekend, but it is still just snowing on Sunday.
But anyway. I will promise a „Icelandic summer sound“ in my next „sound-blog“. I found one file I almost forgot.
