Vorið 2011 benti allt til þess að geitungar myndu eiga erfitt uppdráttar. En það gerðist þó að trjágeitungur byrjaði að búa til hreiður yfir skúrhurðinni hjá mér. Ekki leið á löngu þar til hreiðrið var á stærð við mandarínu. Eggin, sem líklega voru allt að því 15 að tölu, fóru dag frá degi stækkandi og dökknuðu. Að staðaldri var ekki annað að sjá en að í því væru tvær þernur að sísla við eggin. Á daginn var drottningin í stanslausum ferðum, eða að meðaltali inn og út um opið á 2-4 mínútna fresti. En um nóttina fækkaði ferðum sem urðu þá á 20 – 30 mínútna fresti.
Daginn eftir að þessi upptaka fór fram, sem var 7. júlí, eyddi ég búinu því eggin voru greinilega að klekjast út, sem gert hefði alla eyðingu erfiðari.

Queen kill a worker
Wasp traffic recorded close to Wasp nest in Reykjavik 7th of July 2011. First session was recorded when the hair of the mic´s furry was so close to the wasp nest´s door the queen could not access in to the nest. Slowly trough the session the queen gets more angry. And when I moved the mic from the nest she killed one of the two workers in the nest (sorry, I did not record that).

The second session is recorded with the mic more far from the nest. The queen comes and goes when searching for food in daily life.
Most of the audible sound from the nest is the queen and workers footsteps and wing flaps when the queen leaves or accesses the nest.

Þú hefur einstakt lag á að halda manni föngum með hljóðritum þínum. Hvaða skrjáf gæti þetta hafi verið? Kannski bjástur drottningarinnar?
Takk Arnþór. Það er alltaf gaman þegar menn hafa gaman af þessum hljóðritum.
En skrjáfið sem heyrist eru fyrst og fremst „þung“ fótspor drottningarinnar þegar hún „trampar“ um á hreiðurveggnum að utan sem innan.
Þegar hún er ekki við, þá má heyra létt fótatak þernunar sem ég sá aldrei fara frá eggjunum eða úr hreiðrinu…Jú, nema þessa dauðu sem drottningin afhausaði. Þernan var hinsvegar alltaf að basla eitthvað eins og eyra má þegar drottningin er ekki við. Allavega held ég að það skrjáf sem þá heyrast komi ekki frá öðru.
Annars heyrði ég aldrei neitt með berum eyrum frá þessu vespubúi nema suðið þegar drottningin kom og fór. Því finnst mér sjálfum þetta nokkuð skemmtilegt hljóðrit.
Þetta var skemmtileg upplifun að heyra.

I love the juxtaposition of the 2 worlds – the wasps and the traffic sirens etc – neither of them seeming to acknowledge or care about each other. It’ll be interesting, if not dangerous, to return to the nest for more recording as it gets bigger. There are some really good little sounds in there.
Yes it is true. It was a tiny little interesting sound there. Something I could not hear with my bare ears.
It was my plan to let this Wasp nest grow and regularly record the changes. But my wife was so afraid with this creatures she was almost psychotic….so, I need to destroy the nest and kill the Wasps.
Well, it was probably clever idea because the nest was above my garage door.
Probably I should look for some more „easy“ things to follow and record in the future.
ah, the poor wasps. They aren’t usually aggressive unless you interfere with them are they? Maybe Iceland breeds some nasty ones.
Yes, poor wasps. In Iceland are now few species of Wasp. Mainly two species. One make the nest on woods f.ex on houses and another make the nest in the ground. They are more aggressive. But in late August and September all Wasp get aggressive when they leave the nest. Wasp are new settlers in Iceland. I start to notice wasp in Iceland around 1998-2000, so many people are not used to live with this creature.
The species I record was „Wood Wasp“ (very obvious) 🙂
