Comparison of fireworks during the new years eve 2008-2009 and 2010-2011.
Both recordings are made at the same time and at same place during midnight on the New Years Eve.
The picture above shows far more were shot by fireworks the year 2008-2009 (upper stereo tracks) than the year 2010-2011 (lower stereo track). Both tracks shows one hour sound files
Comparison is probably not entirely comparable since the use of various types of microphones. But it can be clearly heard several more explosions at 2008-2009.
CAUTION ! Do not play this soundtrack loud in speakers. It can harm most speakers.
2008-2009 sound track
Recorder: Korg MR1000 (DSD 1Bit/5,644Mhz)
Mic: Rode NT2000 ( 180° NOS setup, 40 cm apart )
Sækja mp3 skrá. (192kbps / 17,6Mb)
2010-2011 sound track. (Áramót 2010-2011)
Recorder: Korg MR1000 with Sound devices 302 preamp (24bit/192khz)
Mic: Rode NT45 ( Omni, 90 cm apart )
Picture: Canon EOS30D
Sækja mp3 skrá. (192kbps / 10,5Mb)
Well done – that was no mean feat to record these with no excessive clipping!
I do prefer your 2008-2009 recording as it appears to be more realistic and full-bodied compared to the 2010-2011 recording.
It may be purely psychological due to the greater average loudness, possibly due to higher gain used to bring it up to 0dBFS. Or was it due to the better 180deg x 40cms NOS setup?
It would be nice to see comparative charts of the frequency response for these two recordings.
Keep up the good work and hope you have successful sound hunting for the New Year!
Thanks for your commnets.
I’m agree. The recording of 2008-2009 is far better. I tried to raise the volume on the 2010-2011 soundscape afterward but I just got distortion on the high peaks.
Afterward there is a explanation for the poor outcome of 2010-2011 soundsscape. It was very cold this time and the recorder and Mixers battery were almost empty when I stop recording. I think even the batteries was not full charged before this recording.
In fact, these recordings are not comparable. Only the activity of the fireworks
I think the Rode NT2000 is very good for these kind of „big noise“ like fireworks. That mic can really handle it. In loud noise like this I think position of the mics does not make the „big thing“ for the recording.
In retrospect I should look at DSD 1bit/5.664Mhz when recording „big noise“ because it handle peak distortion somehow better than WAV 24bit/192kHz. While recording from 2008-2009 is in all manner of explosions at clipping peak level it looks very clear. I’m not sure if WAV 24bit/192kHz can be equal.
I upload few photos from the last New Years Eve, including spectrogram of 2008-2009 frequency range.

The frequency on this downgrade 24/96khz WAV file goes up to 50Khz so in fact it goes much higher.
It is not strange why bird and other animals get crazy or die in this explosions.
Magnus
Thanks Magnus – some great photos of the fireworks.
I agree, it must be the combination of the Rode NT2000 in 180degx40cms NOS setup when matched to the DSD 1 bit/5.664Mhz recorder which makes the huge difference in sound quality – it is very realistic!
Best regards
