It is not possible every day to record nature sounds in as nice weather condition that was early morning at Seltjarnarnes in 25th of May 2000. Weather was calm and dry. Birds as Black backed Gull, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Common Snipe, Golden Plover and Arctic Tern were everywhere along the shore side, busy with their daily life. Close by, a group of female Common Eider was teaching very young ducklings how to search food.
Just after few minutes, I finished to set up the microphones, the Eiders came so close to the rig it was possible to listen their conversation in smallest details for almost two hours.
The quality of this recording still surprises me. It is one of the latest recording I made with Sony TC-D5M cassette deck with a pair of ME 20 microphones. The key of the quality was the microphone cables. Instead of ordinary mic cables I used CAT6 data cables. It makes extraordinary difference for the high frequency signal. All small details in the recording were cleaner and much brighter.
This recording is part of my second CD release, published in limited edition later the year 2000.
Fuglar í Seltjarnarnes fjöru 25. maí 2000
Það er ekki á hverjum degi sem hægt er að taka upp fuglasöng við veðurskilyrði eins og voru þessa nótt á Seltjarnarnesi 25. júní 2000. Veður var einstaklega stillt og allir fuglar voru komnir með unga. Einkenni þessarar upptöku er návígið við æðarkollur og unga þeirra sem leita fæðu í flæðarmálinu. Í mikilli nálægð er hægt að heyra buslið í ungunum og hvernig kollan kennir þeim og ver þá gegn varasömum gestum. Að auki má heyra í öðrum fuglum sem einkenna Seltjarnarnesið s.s. kríu, tjaldi, lóu og hrossagauk. Hljóðin eru síðan síbreytileg þar sem heyra má fuglahópa koma og fara í stöðugri leit sinni að fæðu.
Á sínum tíma þótti upptakan svo góð að hún endaði á CD útgáfu (sjá nánar á sölusíðu).
At 23rd of December I went downtown with my recorder to test a new mic setup in Rycote windshield. It was perfect weather for such things, calm, dry and not too cold.
I have mentioned it before, but binaural recording is almost useless for me in street recording. It is the law of nature that I will be disturbed by someone I know within every ten minutes. So my usual tools to let people know I am busy are fur windshield, boom pole and recorder bag.
This outfit really works. In one evening I recorded undisturbed few hours of street music.
This time I was using my newest MKH8040 ORTF microphone setup, instead of MS as usual.
I totally fell in love with this setup. It will be my “action setup” in the future.
Listening to the ORTF recordings in headphones gives a nice “natural soundspace”. In fact it sounds almost as Binaural. MS recordings can sometimes sounds out of phase, especially when it contains a traffic noise.
Following recording is a “mix collection” of eight music occurrence this evening. It is not all I recorded but just a small taste of what was going on downtown Reykjavik just before Christmas especially when the weather is nice as this day.

Jólatónlist á Þorláksmessu
Þann 23. desember 2012 var fádæma gott veður í Reykjavík. Það var því kjörið að hljóðrita jólastemningu í miðbæ Reykjavíkur.
Fyrr um daginn… í raun allan daginn, fór litið fyrir þessari stemningu. Sérhagsmunaklíka í miðbænum lét bíla vaða um allar götur með fyrirferð, reyk, háfaða og eimyrju langt fram á kvöld. Það var því fátt annað að gera en fara heim og bíða fram á kvöld þegar búast mátti við að líf færðist yfir bæinn og fólk fengi óhindrað að ganga um götur.
Gekk ég þá nokkrar ferðir um Laugaveg, Skólavörðustíg, Bankastræti, Austurstræti og vestur á Hallærisplan og hljóðritaði ýmiskonar “götutónlist” sem víða mátti heyra.
Meðfylgjandi hljóðrit er stutt samantekt af nokkurra klukkustunda efni sem ég náði þetta kvöld.
Ég er ekki viss um hvaða listamenn eru þarna á ferð, en sumir kynna sig. Það væri því vel þegið ef einhver gæti gefið upp nöfn þessa listafólks, annaðhvort í athugasemd hér fyrir neðan eða á myndasíðunni.
Best er að hlusta á hljóðritið í góðum heyrnartólum.
In middle of July my family went in a five days trip around Snæfellsnes peninsula. Of course my recorder follow me as a puppy and I recorded as much as I could days and nights. One of this recordings I made was above a cliff score near Arnarstapi.
The weather was very nice, sunny but a breeze from north-vest so it was calm in the cliffs south of Arnarstapi.
I expanded my boom over the cliff brink and located the microphone in a calm place.
And…. WOW! I got really beautiful ambiance. About 15-20 meters below, the sea wave smoothly stroke the cliffs. Whine black legged Kittiwake flew all around and the cliffs were full of the their tweedy baby’s.
During one hour recording I was totally raped on the cliff edge in this beautiful ambiance.
Close by in next score, fishermens were working at the dock and some tourist walked by behind me.
Rita við Arnarstapa
Um miðjan júlí 2012 fór fjölskyldan í fimm daga ferðalag umhverfis Snæfellsnes. Eins og venja var fylgdi upptökutækið með við hvert fótmál.
Skemmtilegasta hljóðritið sem ég náði í þessari ferð var við Arnarstapa. Ekki að furða því þar er af nægu að taka. Hefði ég getað verið þar við hljóðritanir í marga daga.
Sunnan við löndunarbryggjuna er lítil klettaskora sem gefur skemmtilegan endurhljóm. Teygði ég þar hljóðnemann fram yfir klettabrúnina. Opnaðist þá afar skemmtilegur hljóðheimur sem varð til þess að ég steingleymdi mér í um klukkutíma án þess að hreyfa legg eða lið.
Allt um kring flaug rita vælandi í dagsins önn og á klettasillum mátti sjá og heyra að mikið var af ungum. Fyrir neðan hjalaði svo aldan blíðlega við klettana.
Í bakgrunni má hyra í erlendum ferðamönnum staldra við, spjalla og taka myndir. Þá heyrist einnig umgangur frá bryggjunni þar sem verið var að landa afla og eitthvað í þotuumferð.
It has been my work passing weekends recording birds and other sounds in my garden. Sometimes I am just testing microphones, microphones’ setups, wind protections or batteries. Sometimes I am just hoping to get something unusual, car crash in the neighborhood, earthquake or just something nice and interesting.
This recordings could be many hours long. Then usually this recordings go through different audio software and spectrum analyzer. If nothing interesting is found then most of the files are deleted. Most of them are just traffic noises.
I am used to feed birds in my garden so they are an ideal sound source and the following recording is one of this feeding day in November.
After almost four hours recordings a very big group of Starlings visited my garden. They fly and walk around the microphones. A raven was not far away and frightened most of the starlings when he flew close by.
For many reasons this is a nice recording, but for one reason I was not satisfied with the result.
I will let the listeners to find out what it is and discuss it and response. I will give my answer before Xmas.
Umferð starra
Ég hef gert mikið af því undanfarnar helgar að taka upp umhverfishljóð úti í garði. Oft er ég að prófa hljóðnema, hljóðnemauppsetningar, vindhlífar eða rafhlöður. Oftar en ekki eru spörfuglar sem ég fóðra úti í garði viðfangsefnið þó ég láti mig alltaf dreyma um hið óvænta. Þessar upptökur geta verið margra klukkustunda langar og fátt annað á þeim en hávaðasöm bílaumferð. En áður en upptökunum er hent er þeim rennt í gegnum forrit sem sýna í fljótheitum hvort eitthvað áhugavert sé á þeim að finna. Ef svo er þá er það geymt.
Hér er á ferðinni eins slík upptaka. Eftir nærri fjögurra klukkustunda upptöku kom stór starrahópur í fóðrið sem lagt hafði verið fyrir þá.
Þarna spígspora og flögra fuglarnir umhverfis hljóðnemana, en stór hópur þeirra er uppi í trjánum. Hrafn er í hverfinu og fær hund til að gelta og hræðir síðan fuglana þegar hann flýgur of nærri.
Þetta er að mörgu leyti lífleg og skemmtileg upptaka. En það var eitt atriði sem varð til þess að ég var nærri búinn að henda þessari upptöku.
Ég ætla ekki að segja hvað það er, en ætla að lát hlustendum eftir að dæma upptökuna og segja frá því hvað hafi hugsanlega misfarist og fá þá til að rita ummæli hér fyrir neðan. Ég mun svo segja hvað mér finnst fyrir jól.
Reykjavik downtown was a peaceful place when annual marathon was held 18th of August 2012. The weather was calm and no painful traffic noise as usual. Many streets were closed for cars so there was plenty of space for almost fourteen thousand runners this day.
I placed my microphones in a bush about 500 meters from the starting point.
In the beginning of the recording most footsteps are coming from right to left when runners are on the way to the starting point.
Air plains pass by from left to right and land on Reykjavik Airport.
Runners continue to pass on the way to the starting point, some of them arriving too late.
Few seconds after the race starts, runners begin to pass the microphones from left to right. And there is a lot of runners. Thousands of footsteps in just five minutes….and another airplane passes by the same way, but on the way to the airport.
Then, everything gets normal agin.
Reykjavíkurmaraþon 2012
Það var ákaflega notalegt og beinlínis streitulosandi að fara niður í miðbæ Reykjavíkur, morguninn sem Reykjavíkurmaraþon var haldið þann 18. ágúst 2012. Rúmlega 13 þúsund manns voru skráðar í hlaupið sem var metþátttaka. Veðrið var gott og það besta af öllu var að miðbærinn var laus við bílaumferð. Helsti hávaðinn kom frá gjallarhorni keppnishaldara og frá tveimur flugvélum sem komu til lendingar á Reykjavíkurflugvelli.
Staðsetti ég hljóðnema í runna fyrir neðan Fríkirkjuna og lét þá fanga það sem allt snerist um þennan dag. Í upphafi hljóðritsins má heyra fólk streyma frá hægri til vinstri á leið sinni frá bílastæðum við Hringbraut niður á Lækjargötu að ráslínu. Stuttu eftir að rásmerki er gefið koma hlaupararnir 13 þúsund eins og stórfljót frá vinstri til hægri sem svo hverfur á fimm mínútum. Þegar þeir eru svo horfnir úr augsýn færist allt aftur í eðlilegt horf við Fríkirkjuveg.
This recording was captured around 4:00 to 5:00 am, 25th of June.
It is almost straight continue of part 3 with very quiet relaxing midsummer sound scape but now disturbed with two airplanes passing by from east to west. It was just the beginning of a heavy airplane traffic later this morning. During calm moments thick clouds of gnats filled the air with heavy buzzing noise, but they got suddenly quiet every time when the light gusts stroke the field.
Quality headphone recommended.
Friðland í Flóa 2012 – 4. hluti
Hér er framhald af fyrri upptökum úr friðlandi í Flóa 2012. Þessar upptökur er frá u.þ.b. kl 4:00 til 5:00, að morgni 25 júní. Hér má heyra í fuglum s.s. óðinshana, hrossagauk, stelk, lómi, spóa, kríu, hettumáfi, músarindli og maríuerlu sem og mörgum öðrum fuglum.
Nú fer flugumferð að hefjast af alvöru. Tvær millilandaþotur rjúfa þögnina í þessu hljóðriti. Er það aðeins smjörþefur af því sem síðar kom og sett verður á vefinn síðar.
Hlustist með góðum heyrnartólum.
State opening of parliament was totally different this year than previous three years. Since the bank collapse 2008 people usually had ruction every autumn in the park front of the parliament building.
But 2011 the ruction went to far when one parliamentarian fell to the ground after egg hit his head. So at 2012 the government decided to make it very difficult for everyone to protest. In fact it was forbidden to protest and government took full control of the whole situation. With riot fence and police they make a big circle around the parliament building and nearby church. But that´s not all. The government used speakers to amplify a mass from the church to the crowd that could possibly gather to make a noisy ruction. But the funny thing was just a few protesters arrived. This day mostly armed police was spread all over the park and nearby streets. The few others was staff from media, some protesters, handicap people, curious tourists and drug addicts, so the situation was in fact very peaceful. This mass „cool down“ all activism. Most people just pass by or sat down and listened.
This recording contains the last minutes of the mass and the ruction during the parliamentarians walk from the church to the parliament building. Notes the funny situation when some protester start to scream the mass get louder from speakers.
This time no eggs or other garbage was thrown from the protesters to parliamentarians.
Setning alþingis september 2012
Það var nokkuð sérstakt að mæta niður á Austurvöll 11. september 2012. Helmingur Austurvallar hafði verið girtur af með álgirðingu og lögreglan var búinn að koma sér fyrir í öllum götum umhverfis Alþingishúsið. Úr hátalarakerfi glumdi orðræða postula ríkiskirkjunnar. Aðeins örfáir mótmælendur höfðu mætt og létu í sér heyra. Austurvöllur var þétt setinn af lögreglumönnum sem voru uppáklæddir til að taka þátt í óeirðum og berja á lýðnum. Helst voru það fatlaðir sem höfðu komið sér fyrir undir styttu Jóns Sigurðssonar til að mótmæla sínum bágu kjörum og erlendir ferðamenn sem gengu hjá. Þá var nokkuð um róna sem voru á heimavelli, en nú að hlusta á messu.
Upptakan hér að neðan er af síðustu mínútum messunnar sem og látunum þegar þingmenn gengu frá kirkju til alþingis.
Recordings from Flói nature reserve continues. This two recordings were captured around 3:30 and 4:00 am, 25th of June.
The first recording contains mostly far distance sounds, a quiet relaxing midsummer sound scape. Birds are living their life, flying around and searching for food. Gusts sometimes disturb the recording with rumble sound .
The second recording was recorded around 4 am. It contains the first of many jet flights this morning from Europe to America. Morning sunbeams are now really going to heat the field so clouds of gnats are even thicker than before. A duck with youngsters are pushing their body through rushy field searching for food around the microphone.
Both this recordings are worth to played as a background sound at home or work.
Friðland í Flóa 2012 – 3. hluti
Hér er framhald af fyrri upptökum úr friðlandi í Fóa 2012. Þessar upptökur er frá u.þ.b. kl 3:30 til 4:00, að morgni 25 júní.
Fyrri upptakan inniheldur fremur þögula hljóðmynd af fuglalífi svæðisins. Heyra má þó í óðinshana busla í nálægri tjörn og stöku sinnum stingur kría sér í tjörnina í fæðuleit. Vindkviður eiga það svo til að trufla upptökuna.
Í seinni upptökunni má heyra í fyrstu þotunni þennan morguninn fljúga milli Evrópu og Ameríku. Sólargeislar brjótast nú í gegnum skýin yfir Ingólfsfjalli og verma svæðið. Þegar vind svo lægir þá lyftir flugan sér í þéttum skýsveipum og með miklu suði. Önd með unga kjagar með unga sína í þéttu mýrargrasinu umhverfis hljóðnemana í fæðuleit.
Báðar upptökurnar njóta sín best sem bakgrunnshljóð heima við eða á vinnustað.
In Iceland the state opening of parliament is set every autumn.
The traditional way of the ceremony is when all parliamentarian gathering together in church, next to the parliament building. Within one hour later they march in a parade from the church to the parliament building under honor guards with uniform dressed policeman.
But 1st of October 2011 was different, as usual since 2007 and after the bank crises.
People were both unhappy and disappointed with the parliamentarian. They had spend almost two years to rebuild the same stupid community as before with same greedy banks and capitalism.
At 1st of October 2011 people gathering together downtown and wait for parliamentarian´s parade from church. About 3000 people gathered on the field front of the parliament. Some groups were organized with program, speech and music that they spread over the crowd from a stage. But most of the crowd was not listening to boring speeches. They were waiting for parliamentarian parade.
And when the door opened on the church the crowd started to throw eggs, fireworks and other trash over the parliamentarians. One parliamentarian was hit and fell to the ground, but with help he could rise up again and finish the walk in to the parliament building.
After this ceremony most of the crowd went home but some other stayed on and made loud noise for a while to disturb the ceremony in the parliament.
This short recording contains the moment when the crowd trow the trash to the parade.
Setning Alþingis 2011
Setning Alþingis 1. október 2011 var nokkuð söguleg. Stór hópur fólks hafði safnast á Austurvöll með tunnuslætti, lúðraþyt, tónlist, ræðuhöldum, köllum og hrópum. Flestir voru að mótmæla aðgerðum ríkisstjórnar frá því eftir hrun.
Þegar þingmenn svo gengu frá dómkirkjunni til Alþingis var eggjum, knallertum og öðru rusli kastað á þingmenn. Einn þingmanna, Árni Þór Sigurðsson, fékk eitthvað þungt í höfuðið svo hann féll við, en komst þó við illan leik og með aðstoð annarra, inn í þinghúsið.

This recording is almost a straight continue from “Nature reserve in Flói 2012 – Part 1” that was recorded inside the bird watching shelter. Now the microphones are in the wetland, about 300 meters from the shelter. This is close to a pond, early morning 25th of June, around 3am. Now and then the gust strokes the field, but later one it gets more quiet.
This was a busy time for all residents in the area so the recording contains a lot of their activity.
Birds searching for food in the pound or in the grass around the microphones, like Red- necked Phalarope, Arctic stern, Red throat Loon and some ducks. Birds pass by with wing flaps. There is also a lonely barking dog, bleating sheep and whinny horses somewhere far away.
When morning sunbeams warm the field and the wind goes calm, billions of gnats start to fly in thick clouds up and down with impressive noise. Many other bird species are audible in this recording like Common Snipe, Golden Ploer, Whimbrel, Gull, Rooster and many other birds I can not named like some young birds. Sometimes young Loon are crying, while other birds sounds like Tod (n.b. no Frogs live in Iceland).
This is a very quiet nature recording so you should not play it loud. You should play it like you think you will hear it trough open window, as a background sound. Best way to listen details and explore all bird species is using quality open headphones This recording contain also very loud session when all Loons in all ponds in the area “scream” a territory call.
Surprisingly it looks like only one or two motorist is audible in this recording, a truck about 20 km away So the soundscape is almost as nice as it gets on our planet.

Friðland í Flóa 2012 – 2. hluti.
Hér er á ferðinni svo til beint framhald af 1. hluta, nema nú hafa hljóðnemarnir verið færðir út að tjörn norðaustur af fuglaskoðunarhúsinu. Upptakan er frá því 25. júní u.þ.b. kl. 3 eftir miðnætti. Heyra má í ýmsum fuglum í dagsins önn. Meðal fugla voru lómur, lóa, hrossagaukur, óðinshani, spói, auðnutittlingur, jaðrakan, stelkur, álft, tjaldur hettumáfur, kría, kjói og sílamáfur. Einhverjar andategundir voru svo á vappi og sveimi um svæðið á meðan á upptöku stóð. Í fjarska heyrist jarm, hundgá, hanagal og hnegg í hestum. Þegar fyrstu sólargeislarnir gægjast yfir Ingólfsfjall og verma svæðið lyftir flugan sér í þykkum sveimum með þéttu suði.
Aldrei þessu vant fer ekki mikið fyrir umferðarhávaða í þessu hljóðskeiði. Greina má þó bíla fara niður Kambana í 20 km fjarlægð. Í raun má greina ferðir þeirra frá Kömbum og fylgja þeim eftir austur fyrir Selfoss á upprunalegu upptökunni og fullum gæðum.
Þetta er lágvær upptaka. Það er því besta að spila hana á lágværum nótum eins og setið sé við opinn glugga. En fyrir þá sem vilja greina fuglategundir og önnur hljóð er mælt með að hlustað sé á upptökuna með góðum opnum heyrnartólum.
Margra klukkutíma efni var tekið upp á þessum stað. Fleiri upptökur munu því heyrast á komandi mánuðum.
