In recent years, I have been on the evening shift on December 23 (Þorláksmessa). So I haven’t been able to go downtown Reykjavík to record the ‘mood for Christmas’. But this December I was on a day shift which gave me the opportunity to record.
The last time was 5 years ago when I recorded this beautiful song on December 23, 2017.
It was a different atmosphere in the city center this year. I didn’t understand what it was, at least now there were more foreign tourists and the streets were covered in salt-slush and ice. This year there were no beautiful singing voices in the crowd as so often before. However, music comes from some street stalls and bars. On the ice skating rink at Hallærisplan (Ingólfstorg square), music was played loud during the skating dance.
After total 1Km long walk the recording ends rather quietly in a bar where I bought a beer.
In this recording I am using the same ultralight stereo microphone as I did in 2017. Baffled double capsule EM172/272 with a LOM Phantom power amp,
But today I have filled the empty space inside the wind shield between the microphones with a sponge of different density which has improved the separation between the right and left channels. It reduced the audible phase error between the channels which was clearly audible in the 2017 recording.
In addition, in the space between the microphone, outside the Rycote WS2 windshield and under the HWC2 Hi-wind fleece cover, is also a sponge. That sponge stops most of the vibration in the windshield due to wind, without affecting the sound quality.
This stereo microphone is very light, can withstand incredibly high winds, as well it has almost no „handling noise“. It is therefore good for booming where strong winds can be expected.
In this recording I did not use HPF. Between the houses and out in the open spaces where I walked, there was a considerable amount of wind that probably few, if any, microphones would have been able to withstand without wearing a good fur windshield plus additional HPF.
The more I use this DIY mic, which is mostly made from scrap materials, the happier I am with it.
Earlier that same night, I also recorded with simple EM172 binaural microphones. In many ways, that recording was very funny because no one around me noticed that I was recording, unlike the recording below. But that recording will have to wait to be published until later.
I also recorded for over an hour at the bar a nice mood recording, but I will never be able to publish it because the bar was playing copyrighted music.
Quality open headphones are recommended while listening at mid to mid+ volume.

It was very nice weather this evening. The downtown was almost overcrowded with people which was shopping or just walking around to feel and smell the atmosphere of Christmas.
It was calm so the town smelled strongly of cloves, toasted knead, spirit, red vine, beer, all kinds of perfume, tobacco and even weed…and what is never missing in Reykjavik, a smell of exhaust from traffic. This was perfect weather to catch the sound of the Christmas rush hour.
Just 30 second after I start the recording, I heard beautiful singing voices. There were six singers of female song group „Jólabjöllurnar“.
I placed my self around 4 meters from the singers. Behind me was the audience on their walk who stopped for a moment to listen. The heavy background noise is mostly from car traffic, as usual.
This recording is captured with DIY binaural microphone rig which I just finished to prepare several hours before the recording. It contains two matched pair of parallel Primo EM172 capsules, connected to LOM phantom power adapter (see pictures).
I spent two hours walking around recording this evening. I noticed some audible time error between left and right channel in 30-40° around the rig which means the rig needs some changes in the future. But the funny thing is this time error sounds like a perfect „sound effect“ in combination with this well trained singers.
This was recorded on Lækjatorg square in Reykjavik town center between 9 – 10 pm.
Quality open headphones are recommended while listening at mid level.

(Wikipedia)
Að sama skapi þá breytti byltingin í Rússlandi allri pólitík á vesturlöndum, því í kjölfar hennar fékk almenningur auknar kjarabætur, heilsugæslu og betra skólakerfi frameftir síðustu öld.
Vinstri menn á Íslandi fjölmenntu og héldu upp á þennan viðburð í Iðnó 7. nóvember 2017 með skemmtilegri samkomu þar sem haldnar voru hressilegar ræður, kveðið og sungið á víxl í tæpa þrjá klukkutíma.
Að sjálfsögðu mætti ég með upptökutæki og tók upp viðburðin meðal gesta í miðjum sal. Sú upptaka sem hér heryrist eru tveir dagsrárliðir sem áttu sér stað eftir hlé. Annars vegar er það ræða Vésteins Valgarðssonar og svo lokaatriðið þar sem allir sungu Internationalinn, öll sex erindin þar sem Þorvaldur Þorvaldsson leiðir sönginn og frændi hans, Þorvaldur Örn Þorvaldsson, spilar á gítar.
Því miður er hljóðkerfið í Iðnó afskaplega lélegt. Hljómgæðin eru því skelfileg þó upptaka hafi heppnast með ágætum.

October Revolution 100 years anniversary

At the 7th of 2017 many socialists and other left wing folks in Reykjavik calibrated the 100th anniversary of the Russian October Revolution.
The program included inspired speeches, poetry and songs and singalong songs that lasted for almost three hours. This recording contains two of this programs, an Icelandic speech and then singalong song of The Internationale in full version in Icelandic.
I think I need to apologize for the poor sound quality in this recording but it is mainly because of the sound system of the house.

For this occasion many march or demonstrations occurred in cities all around the world where the leaders in the conference were encouraged to make a very radical agreements.
One such climate march was gone in Reykjavik in a cold Sunday, November 29th, 2015.
The following recording includes the second half of the march and two short speeches in the end (in Icelandic) at Lækjartorg square in Reykjavik center.

„Oh boy another fireworks recording“. This came up in my mind when I decided to put this recording on the web.
But this recording was made in the end of the Reykjavik Culture Nights at 23rd of August 2014 when one third of the Icelandic population was in down town Reykjavik in a wonderful weather. As usual after the rock concert finished, the program ends with a great Fireworks show. This show is normally a big hit…even for recordists.
This recording was a „Binaural array test“. It is a microphone setup I hope I can develop for my needs for nature recordings. It is a pair of MKH20 microphones in a single Rycote stereo windshield which I hope will give a better result than AB40 array with BBG Rycote windshield. I also hope it will give more natural and relaxing „sound space“ while listening, similar as binaural recordings with Dummy head. Fireworks are probably not the best sound source for such test, but anyway MKH20 is a grate sounding mic and in this case it was important to detect sound from all directions to pick up the echo from buildings all around. The rumble bass and the calm music in the background is coming from the concert stage. The fireworks start slowly but end in total madness.
I recommend quality headphones while listening.
I will not inform about my opinion about this test- recording , but you are welcome to leave a comment below.

Reykjavík Culture Night was held for the nineteenth time on 23rd of August 2014. As usual it normally ends with a big concert and a fireworks in Reykjavík downtown.
This year the weather was wet but warm.
I was soaked when the fireworks started, and I was probably not in the best place to record fireworks. But it was as interesting to listen to the joyful crowd during the show.
In just 9 minutes they blew up three tons of fireworks from several places around the concert stage.  More information about this dance project and Reykjavik culture nights.

Eldar, dansverk fyrir þrjú tonn af flugeldum

Upptaka frá flugedasýningu menningarnætur 24. ágúst 2013 í blautu en hlýju veðri. Því miður má heyra það á upptökunni að vindhlífin var, þegar þarna kom við sögu, orðin  gegnblaut. En engu að síður, stemmningi skilar sér bærilega.

Last spring was cold and windy and 26th of May was no exception when I cycle downtown Reykjavik with my recording gear. It was a accordion day and members of the Accordion club of Reykjavik was playing in the city hall. When I arrive it was overcrowded and the sound quality was poor from the amplified monitors. So I decided to stay outside and listen instead to the birds on the pound, close to the hall.
This recording contain my walk beside the pond, from the southeast side (as seen on the picture) trough the city hall to the northwest side, into very different atmosphere.

Gengið í gegn um ráðhús Reykjavíkur

Þann 26 maí gerði ég mér ferð í ráðhúsið í norðankalda til að hlusta á Harmonikkufélag Reykjavíkur spila á hinum árvissa harmonikkudegi. Það átti ekki að koma á óvart að hljómburðurinn í Ráðhúsinu var handónýtur svo ég staldraði stutt við. Í staðinn fór ég að fylgjast með fuglum á tjörninni og hljóðrita það sem fyrir augu og eyru bar.

Hallgrímskirkja

At 23rd of December I went downtown with my recorder to test a new mic setup in Rycote windshield. It was perfect weather for such things, calm, dry and not too cold.
I have mentioned it before, but binaural recording is almost useless for me in street recording. It is the law of nature that I will be disturbed by someone I know within every ten minutes. So my usual tools to let people know I am busy are fur windshield, boom pole and recorder bag.
This outfit really works. In one evening I recorded undisturbed few hours of street music.
This time I was using my newest MKH8040 ORTF microphone setup, instead of MS as usual.
I totally fell in love with this setup. It will be my “action setup” in the future.
Listening to the ORTF recordings in headphones gives a nice “natural soundspace”. In fact it sounds almost as Binaural. MS recordings can sometimes sounds out of phase, especially when it contains a traffic noise.
Following recording is a “mix collection” of eight music occurrence this evening. It is not all I recorded but just a small taste of what was going on downtown Reykjavik just before Christmas especially when the weather is nice as this day.
Quality headphones are recommended.
