At the end of July, a seismic period began on the Reykjanes peninsula, which ended with a volcanic eruption in Meradalar south of Reykjavík, not far from the place that last erupted in Fagradalsfjall during the COVID period.
I recorded for a few days during the earthquakes. Both with microphones and simultaneously with Geophones on four channels. After I had set up the microphones, the big quake stopped, but I did catch one that was 4.8 on magnitude.
When it started to erupt in Meradalir, the seismic activity stopped almost completely.
I took advantage of the weekend for a cycle trip to the eruption site and recorded approx. four hours of material. It was not easy. There was a lot of gas pollution and wind that are always characteristic of volcanic eruptions, but tourists and drones in the area never shut up.
I didn’t have a gas mask, which made the situation almost unbearable these four hours. It was therefore also impossible for me to record in places where other visitors could not reach.
I had my second best microphones for this project. It was my parallel MKH8020/8040 rig that gave me a lot of options to record a difficult and different subject. The attached recording is a small composite story of the events of the last few days, starting with an earthquake that then leads to a volcanic eruption.
The earthquake was recorded on four channels with two NT2a in MS configuration and two LOM geophones fixed in X/Y axis in my garage.
The eruption was recorded in AB40 on four channels with parallel MKH8020/8040 mic rig.
In post-processing, 8020 was used for the low frequency and 8040 was used for the higher frequency, which significantly reduced the noise from tourists and wind noise without losing the low frequency which in some places sounded more like a shock waves from the crater.
The recording of the eruption is from three places at the eruption site. You can actually hear it when I move the microphones once.
Then, unfortunately, drones and airplanes can be heard.
During the eruption, sounds are heard that would be worth explaining. There is a lot of all kinds of white noise, which mainly comes from glowing slag that splashes in all directions when it falls to the ground around the crater. It was also interesting to hear when it rained on the lava, an unusually loud white noise filled the air. It may be heard for a while in this recording.
Quality open headphones are recommended while listening at mid volume.
Be careful, this recording starts quietly. But most of it is pretty loud, especially at lower frequencies.

Earthquakes have shaken southwestern Iceland for more than two weeks. They have been counted in many thousands since it began so folks like me are going to feel like all earthquakes below 4 in magnitude are a normal state
But not everyone feels the same way. All those who live close to the source of the earthquakes are going to be very tired of this situation, mainly inhabitants of Grindavík town and nearby places.
When I was working on this blog as an example, an earthquake hit my house which was 5.4 magnitude. It is similar in magnitude as those which first heard in the recording below.
The following earthquakes were recorded in my garage in Reykjavik which is 25-30Km from the earthquake’s source.
The first two earthquakes were recorded with parallel Nevaton MC59O & MC59C, on four channels in  AB40 setup. All other earthquakes were recorded using the Nevaton MC50Quad in MS setup. These Nevaton microphones are the only ones I have that can reach below 10Hz and can therefore also record the fluctuations in the aftershocks.
This recording contains sixteen earthquakes, collected from continuous one week long recording. They are mainly earthquakes which happen during the nighttime to avoid traffic noise. Most of them were above 3 magnitude…I guess.

International Workers’ Day 2017

Socialism have a long history in Iceland. But that story will not been told here.
Following recording is from the establishment, (or restoration), of the Socialist party of Iceland, 1st. of May 2017. It is all in Icelandic, so if you are learning Icelandic it is worth to listen.

The 14th of September 2014 over 100 people met in a ceremony in Arnarholt, west of Iceland, to introduce the tree of the year. This tree is 105 years old European Larch (Larix decidua) so it is one of the oldest tree in Iceland .
The one hour ceremony included speeches, songs and valid measurements of the tree.
The tree was 15,2 meter high with 2 m circumference.
The following recording does not include the whole ceremony. The problem was that all the speeches were trough megaphone so the sound was awful. But the songs were ok and one speech about history of the tree too. The recording ends with another recording I made after the ceremony under the tree with binaural array and contact mics on the tree bole.

In last week of August the first “real winter storm” arrived to Iceland, with strong cold wind and snow down to 300 m o.s. Luckily it was not as bad as weather forecast expected.
But for sure more and stronger storms will arrive in coming months. Sometimes it happens during high tide and with extremely low air pressure so the whole harbor is floating in deep seawater.
Last autumn 2012, we got at last two times a “real storm”, and both this storms arrived while I was at work. It was really dangerous to be outside so we spent most of the day inside. Regularly we heard loud “drumming sound” and got a taste of an earthquake when containers and reefers flew of the stacks to the ground.
Following recording was recorded in one of those bad weather situations 2nd of November 2012. It is mostly audible wind noises with flying garbage around when suddenly somewhere in the harbor one container take off from a stack and fells to the ground.

Ocean of words
There are many sound bloggers I regularly visit. One of them is Des Coulam´s “Soundlandscapes´ Blog”. What he writes in the blog is often very informative. But he also makes very nice Binaural street recordings. Something I have tried many times, but just seldom be satisfied with, because I have always been disturbed by many things during recording.
In a small community like Iceland – Reykjavik where everybody knows everyone I am usually disturbed after some minutes with someone who knows me or I knows. Just an “ordinary street recording” can therefore be as difficult to record as many nature recordings with extreme situation.
In 17th of June 2011 at Iceland´s independents day I tried something different than Binaural setup. I planed to use a blimp on boom to record in many places in Reykjavik. I thought if I used this highly visible items some of the people who knew me would not disturb me. But it looks even more difficult to record with this setup. Many people now stopped, even foreign tourists, looked at me, and asked: “Where is the camera?” or “What are you doing”?
But in one place in town center, in Austurstæti I could record ocean of words without being disturbed in at least 20 minutes.

Það var mikið um að vera í miðbæ Reykajvíkur 17. júní 2011 á 200 ára afmæli Jóns Sigurðssonar. Fólk fjölmennti í bæinn og tók þátt í ýmsum viðburðum. Um kvöldið var harmónikkuball í Ráðhúsinu. Þangað mætti mikið af eldri borgurum og skemmtu sér konunglega við dans við undirleik Harmónikkufélags Reykjavíkur. Þegar ég mætti á svæðið með upptökutækið var farið að líða að lokum en margt fólk þeyttist enn um gólfið eins og um tvítugt væri.
Þess skal getið að leyfi fékkst fyrir að setja harmónikkuleikinn á vefinn.

Accordion ball in town hall
Icelanders keep the Independence Day at 17th of June. All over the country people was celebrating with all kind of entertainment such as concerts and dances and other things. Now this year in the evening, a accordion ball was held in the Reykjavik City Hall. The players in the accordion band were members in the Accordion club of Reykjavik (Harmonikufélag Reykjavikur). As usual mostly older people met at the ball to dance but younger people and shy pass by, watch and listen.
I went there and recorded the last part of the ball.
Here are two sessions. The first one I have the microphones far away from the band almost amid the crowd of the dancing people. In the second session I have the microphones close to the stages and the accordion band.
