This spring I got several young rats in my garage. They have probably stayed there some weeks eating the bred I used to feed the bird with last winter. Now when it was finished it was time to clean the garage of all mammals.
I owned a very nice mouse trap, a trap that would not kill the mouse. It was perfect for that job because the rats I had already seen had the size of a mouse.
It took just 15 minutes to hunt the first rat witch I put in a hamster cage.
It took eight hours for the second rat to reach the trap. During that time I recorded the whole progress in the garage on four channels. Two channels over the cage with the first rat and other two channels near the trap.
The following recording includes the moment when the rat got stuck in the trap and what happened when it realize the situation. Later on the rat in the cage starts to activate but during the night it was busy trying to find freedom.
Note: Do not play this loudly in the beginning. The trap is very loud when it pop the lock.

Rottugildra

Some weeks ago I found a photo gallery on the web. All those photos were taken by a Dutch photographer Willem van de Pool when he visited Iceland in the summer 1934. It was the year when my parents were born so it gave me a connection back to last century.
The quality of those photos is stunning. It looks like they have been taken yesterday. Most of the places are easily identified even though the surroundings have changed a lot.   Willem captured five pictures at Laugarvatn, a place about 75 km east of Reykjavik. At this time my grand grandfather was a landowner at Laugarvatn farm and a district administrative officer.
Following picture above shows some people relaxing in hot sand. This shore is just below a big hot spring named “Stóri hver” (not shown on the picture). Today this place between Stóri hver and the lake is so hot that the sand is used every day to bake a bread.
The following one piece recording was made 25th of July 2012, with BP4025 on a boom pole, moved close to the boiling surface between Stóri hver to Laugarvatn Lake. It starts at Stóri hver, then scanning the boiling sand and then to the lake surface.

Hér er á ferðinni upptaka sem tekin var upp við Stóra hver sunnan við „2007“ baðhúsið.  Notast var við BP4025 stereo hljóðnema á bómu og hann færður hægt og sígandi um svæðið milli Stórahvers fram yfir vatnsyfirborð Laugarvatns.

Three stereo microphones noise and sensitivity comparison.
Shure VP88 – Rode NT4 – Audio Technica BP4025

This recordings include a spoken word from pocket radio at very low volume and ticking alarm clock in 1,6m distance. The volume settings on the radio was so low, the sound was hardly audible with bare ears. Noise from radiator pipeline is audible in the background. Miscellaneous bird life is outside and should be also clearly audible.
Keep in mind. This test is only noise and sensitivity comparison. High sensitivity and low noise is VERY important for nature recordings. This comparison does not give any information how this microphones sounds for music recording or how they withstand high pressure sound level.

Quality headphones recommended while listen.

Shure VP88, Rode NT4 and Audio Technica BP4025 direct from recorder. All at same gain level at 55dB.

All three recordings are now independently level normalized up to 0dB.

This is another ambience recording from the island Flatey in Breiðafjörður, a straight continue of part one.
Women, children as well as the elderly all gather for a boat is docking. Two men, with the day’s catch, step ashore.
When the catch has been divided, the whole throng returns to the village in a cacophony of conversations and drift homewards.
Somewhat nearer, in front of the microphone are a few Red-necked Phalaropes as well as Mallard ducks with ducklings. Other distinguishing birds like the loud Arctic tern and Whimbrel, as well as many other species of bird, can be heard.

Flatey í Breiðafirði 2012. Annar hluti.

Þetta er beint framhald af fyrsta hluta.
Nú safnast allir saman, konur, börn jafnt sem gamalmenni því bátur kemur að landi. Tveir menn með afla dagsins ganga á land. Þegar honum hefur verið skipt,  kemur allur manskapurinn aftur inn í þorp með miklu skvaldri þar sem hver fer til síns heima.
Nokkuð nærri, framan við hljóðnemana voru fjörugir Óðinshanar og stokendur með unga. Aðrir háværar tegundir eru háværar s.s. kría og spói auk margra annarra fuglategunda.

Flatey is the biggest island in Breiðafjörður bay in the west of Iceland, but nevertheless a small island. It is a wonderful place. Rich, widely spiced bird life and no car traffic. Most houses are old and most of them are nicely rebuilt. No one lives there all year around but in spring, summer and autumn lot of people stays there. Sometimes the place is overcrowded with tourists but there is both a campsite and a hotel.
I spent few hours in Flatey in June 2012 with my family. We just walked around in this relaxing surroundings. The east part of the island was closed because of bird’s hatch and eyas. But the life in the “village” was also interesting.
Strong gust from vest made recording difficult but I found a quiet place beside a wall not far away from the “main street”. In front of me was a small marsh and it was overcrowded with all kinds of birds; snipe, gull, golden plover, white wagtail, oystercatcher, arctic tern, ducks and so on, but closest to the microphone is a red necked phalarope. In distance Kittiwake and other birds are audible.
I was very lucky this time, there were few tourists on the island so the recording contains relaxing conversations between neighbors in this wonderful ambience. In the beginning a child is drumming a box, but it last only for 5 minutes. After that it is possible to listen what people and birds have to say.

Flatey í Breiðafirði 2012. Fyrri partur

Arnarstapi

In middle of July my family went in a five days trip around Snæfellsnes peninsula. Of course my recorder follow me as a puppy and I recorded as much as I could days and nights. One of this recordings I made was above a cliff score near Arnarstapi.
The weather was very nice, sunny but a breeze from north-vest so it was calm in the cliffs south of Arnarstapi.
I expanded my boom over the cliff brink and located the microphone in a calm place.
And…. WOW! I got really beautiful ambiance. About 15-20 meters below, the sea wave smoothly stroke the cliffs. Whine black legged Kittiwake flew all around and the cliffs were full of the their tweedy baby’s.
During one hour recording I was totally raped on the cliff edge in this beautiful ambiance.
Close by in next score,  fishermens were working at the dock and some tourist walked by behind me.
