Recording fireworks is probably like photographing a sunset for a photographer. Nothing special but there is always some duty that calls for it to be done.
It is not the loud sound that fascinates, but the interaction of the sound with the environment. Reflection of a sound wave. e.g. the echoes from houses, mountains or trees that make it interesting to record fireworks. The problem, however, is that I am often confined to staying at home with my family on this day. I am therefore not in different places from year to year, and therefore I have to say that I have not made a good or interesting recording of fireworks, apart from maybe one recording in Tenerife. I’m also always experimenting with microphone setups, which usually don’t work out well when there’s a lot of other things going on.
It is with mixed feelings that I put a fireworks recording on the web this time. Have done it before and therefore not urgent to do it again because it always sounds as a loud noise which is not healthy for the ears or speakers.
But this new year is marked by terrible wars, which unfortunately all have their origins to the western hegemony and imperialism, as usual. Most recently with the targeted genocide in Palestine which as of this writing can easily escalate into an even bigger war, more or less all over the middle east.
The NATO proxy war in Ukraine is still going on after almost ten years conflict. It has destroyed Ukraine and seems to be also destroying Europe in coming years, if not in decades because of politicians stupidity. This time, the West, led by the United States, EU & GB has lost both credibility and the trust of most nations in the world.
The world is changing. US unipolar empire is falling and new multipolar empires are rising. At the same time, the US will drag Europe down in the fall and destroy Europe as a flourishing continent, only because of insane hatred towards Russia.
The new year therefore does not seem to offer anything good for many nations, but only continued with conflict and disaster. Fireworks with all its noise are therefore no longer part of entertainment in my mind, but a reminder of war with destruction, killings and mutilations.

This recording was made in my backyard, between houses with LCT540s in IRT. You can hear that the echo time is short. Some might think it’s because I used a Limiter. But the Limiter was turned off, as always should be done when recording fireworks. Recording sound pressure rose to a peak of +7.7dB (-7.4 LUFS-S) .
Details that can often be heard in fireworks when they are launched are not heard clearly in this recording because they were launched from beyond the houses in this backyard. However, I had another microphone set (MKH20/40 parallel AB) close to a place where people were setting off fireworks, but that recording did not go well for various reasons.
Even though this recording has been downgraded to mp3, be careful when listening to this recording. Don´t put up the volume, especially not when listening with speakers.
Quality open headphones are recommended while listening at mid/high-level.
Following picture shows the spectrogram of the whole recording this new years eve. But following recording start at 22:30min. Midnight is at 30:00min and the recording end at 52:30min

Recording fireworks can be difficult. The dynamic of the blast is normally far more than the equipment can record in full quality. So acceptable recording level is very important, especially when sound process afterwards is not allowed.
The limiter in Sound devices 744 & 302 can work smoothly if they are not „overloaded“ too much, so again, acceptable recording level is very important.
Another big factor for good fireworks recording is the location. Any reflection or echo from nearby buildings or mountains can make the whole blasting thing as an outstanding symphony.
Culture night has been held in August in Reykjavik for twenty years and it normally ends with huge down town rock concert and a firework show. As usual I went there this year to record the fireworks. For a one year I have been thinking for better recording location, because I have never been happy with my firework recordings before. This year I spotted place nearby Harpa concert hall where two big buildings are on two sides. I was pretty excited for the outcome.
I waited there for the last song from the rock concert. Normally I would have about 5 to 10 minutes to prepare my gear after the last song, until the fireworks starts.
But suddenly the fireworks stated before the concert ended.
I panicked! I started my gear while I tried to run in the darkness to my deliberate place. I was tangled in the mic cord so I was afraid to damage something on the run. And because of the tangled cord I could not rise the boom above my head.
I was MAD! I lost about half and the best part of the show and faced some stupid troubles and mistakes, like level adjustments.
As usual it would take me one year to have another opportunity!
I did not listen to the recording when I came home. It was not until last week, when the dance artist and the author of the firework show, Sigríður Soffia Nielsdóttir asked me for the recording. She was planing to use it in a dance project show. Sadly I could not send her the whole firework show. But who knows, it will probably all, or part of it, be used in her dance project this October.
The following recording is just as it comes out of the recorder, it is just fade in/out and downgraded to mp3. So it start suddenly without warning with loud blasts. So be careful, don´t put up the volume, especially not when listening with speakers.
Quality open headphones are recommended while listening at mid/high-level.

„Oh boy another fireworks recording“. This came up in my mind when I decided to put this recording on the web.
But this recording was made in the end of the Reykjavik Culture Nights at 23rd of August 2014 when one third of the Icelandic population was in down town Reykjavik in a wonderful weather. As usual after the rock concert finished, the program ends with a great Fireworks show. This show is normally a big hit…even for recordists.
This recording was a „Binaural array test“. It is a microphone setup I hope I can develop for my needs for nature recordings. It is a pair of MKH20 microphones in a single Rycote stereo windshield which I hope will give a better result than AB40 array with BBG Rycote windshield. I also hope it will give more natural and relaxing „sound space“ while listening, similar as binaural recordings with Dummy head. Fireworks are probably not the best sound source for such test, but anyway MKH20 is a grate sounding mic and in this case it was important to detect sound from all directions to pick up the echo from buildings all around. The rumble bass and the calm music in the background is coming from the concert stage. The fireworks start slowly but end in total madness.
I recommend quality headphones while listening.
I will not inform about my opinion about this test- recording , but you are welcome to leave a comment below.

Comparison of fireworks during the new years eve 2008-2009 and 2010-2011.
Both recordings are made at the same time and at same place during midnight on the New Years Eve.
The picture above shows far more were shot by fireworks the year 2008-2009 (upper stereo tracks) than the year 2010-2011 (lower stereo track). Both tracks shows one hour sound files
Comparison is probably not entirely comparable since the use of various types of microphones. But it can be clearly heard several more explosions at 2008-2009.
CAUTION ! Do not play this soundtrack loud in speakers. It can harm most speakers.

New Year Eve in Reykjavik.
Iceland is one of the few places in the world where the public gets to play with explosives/fireworks some days. When it happens, especially during new years eve, then can be both great air- and noise pollution in Reykjavik.
CAUTION ! Do not play this soundtrack loud in speakers. It can harm most speakers.
