State opening of parliament in September 2012

Austurvöllur

State opening of parliament was totally different this year than previous three years. Since the bank collapse 2008 people usually had ruction every autumn in the park front of the parliament building.
But 2011 the ruction went to far when one parliamentarian fell to the ground after egg hit his head. So at 2012 the government decided to make it very difficult for everyone to protest. In fact it was forbidden to protest and government took full control of the whole situation. With riot fence and police they make a big circle around the parliament building and nearby church. But that´s not all. The government used speakers to amplify a mass from the church to the crowd that could possibly gather to make a noisy ruction. But the funny thing was just a few protesters arrived. This day mostly armed police was spread all over the park and nearby streets. The few others was staff from media, some protesters, handicap people, curious tourists and drug addicts, so the situation was in fact very peaceful. This mass „cool down“ all activism. Most people just pass by or sat down and listened.
This recording contains the last minutes of the mass and the ruction during the parliamentarians walk from the church to the parliament building. Notes the funny situation when some protester start to scream the mass get louder from speakers.
This time no eggs or other garbage was thrown from the protesters to parliamentarians.

Setning alþingis september 2012

Það var nokkuð sérstakt að mæta niður á Austurvöll 11. september 2012. Helmingur Austurvallar hafði verið girtur af með álgirðingu og lögreglan var búinn að koma sér fyrir í öllum götum umhverfis Alþingishúsið. Úr hátalarakerfi glumdi orðræða postula ríkiskirkjunnar. Aðeins örfáir mótmælendur höfðu mætt og létu í sér heyra. Austurvöllur var þétt setinn af lögreglumönnum sem voru uppáklæddir til að taka þátt í óeirðum og berja á lýðnum. Helst voru það fatlaðir sem höfðu komið sér fyrir undir styttu Jóns Sigurðssonar til að mótmæla sínum bágu kjörum og erlendir ferðamenn sem gengu hjá. Þá var nokkuð um róna sem voru á heimavelli, en nú að hlusta á messu.
Upptakan hér að neðan er af síðustu mínútum messunnar sem og látunum þegar þingmenn gengu frá kirkju til alþingis.

Nature reserve in Flói 2012. Part 3

Flói

Recordings from Flói nature reserve continues. This two recordings were captured around 3:30 and 4:00 am, 25th of June.
The first recording contains mostly far distance sounds, a quiet relaxing midsummer sound scape. Birds are living their life, flying around and searching for food. Gusts sometimes disturb the recording with rumble sound .
The second recording was recorded around 4 am. It contains the first of many jet flights this morning from Europe to America. Morning sunbeams are now really going to heat the field so clouds of gnats are even thicker than before. A duck with youngsters are pushing their body through rushy field searching for food around the microphone.
Both this recordings are worth to played as a background sound at home or work.

Friðland í Flóa 2012 – 3. hluti

Hér er framhald af fyrri upptökum úr friðlandi í Fóa 2012. Þessar upptökur er frá u.þ.b. kl 3:30 til 4:00, að morgni 25 júní.
Fyrri upptakan inniheldur fremur þögula hljóðmynd af fuglalífi svæðisins. Heyra má þó í óðinshana busla í nálægri tjörn og stöku sinnum stingur kría sér í tjörnina í fæðuleit. Vindkviður eiga það svo til að trufla upptökuna.
Í seinni upptökunni má heyra í fyrstu þotunni þennan morguninn fljúga milli Evrópu og Ameríku. Sólargeislar brjótast nú í gegnum skýin yfir Ingólfsfjalli og verma svæðið. Þegar vind svo lægir þá lyftir flugan sér í þéttum skýsveipum og með miklu suði. Önd með unga kjagar með unga sína í þéttu mýrargrasinu umhverfis hljóðnemana í fæðuleit.
Báðar upptökurnar njóta sín best sem bakgrunnshljóð heima við eða á vinnustað.

State Opening Of Parliament in October 2011

Althing Austurvollur

In Iceland the state opening of parliament is set every autumn.
The traditional way of the ceremony is when all parliamentarian gathering together in church, next to the parliament building. Within one hour later they march in a parade from the church to the parliament building under honor guards with uniform dressed policeman.
But 1st of October 2011 was different, as usual since 2007 and after the bank crises.
People were both unhappy and disappointed with the parliamentarian. They had spend almost two years to rebuild the same stupid community as before with same greedy banks and capitalism.
At 1st of October 2011 people gathering together downtown and wait for parliamentarian´s parade from church. About 3000 people gathered on the field front of the parliament. Some groups were organized with program, speech and music that they spread over the crowd from a stage. But most of the crowd was not listening to boring speeches. They were waiting for parliamentarian parade.
And when the door opened on the church the crowd started to throw eggs, fireworks and other trash over the parliamentarians. One parliamentarian was hit and fell to the ground, but with help he could rise up again and finish the walk in to the parliament building.
After this ceremony most of the crowd went home but some other stayed on and made loud noise for a while to disturb the ceremony in the parliament.
This short recording contains the moment when the crowd trow the trash to the parade.

Setning Alþingis 2011

Setning Alþingis 1. október 2011 var nokkuð söguleg. Stór hópur fólks hafði safnast á Austurvöll með tunnuslætti, lúðraþyt, tónlist, ræðuhöldum, köllum og hrópum. Flestir voru að mótmæla aðgerðum ríkisstjórnar frá því eftir hrun.
Þegar þingmenn svo gengu frá dómkirkjunni til Alþingis var eggjum, knallertum og öðru rusli kastað á þingmenn. Einn þingmanna, Árni Þór Sigurðsson, fékk eitthvað þungt í höfuðið svo hann féll við, en komst þó við illan leik og með aðstoð annarra, inn í þinghúsið.
Þessi upptaka inniheldur það augnablik þegar þingmenn gengu frá Dómkirkju til Alþingis. Sjá frétt sem tengist þessum atburði á Vísi

Nature reserve in Flói 2012. Part2

Nature reserve Floi

This recording is almost a straight continue from “Nature reserve in Flói 2012 – Part 1” that was recorded inside the bird watching shelter. Now the microphones are in the wetland, about 300 meters from the shelter. This is close to a pond, early morning 25th of June, around 3am. Now and then the gust strokes the field, but later one it gets more quiet.
This was a busy time for all residents in the area so the recording contains a lot of their activity.
Birds searching for food in the pound or in the grass around the microphones, like Red- necked Phalarope, Arctic stern, Red throat Loon and some ducks. Birds pass by with wing flaps. There is also a lonely barking dog, bleating sheep and whinny horses somewhere far away.
When morning sunbeams warm the field and the wind goes calm, billions of gnats start to fly in thick clouds up and down with impressive noise. Many other bird species are audible in this recording like Common Snipe, Golden Ploer, Whimbrel, Gull, Rooster and many other birds I can not named like some young birds. Sometimes young Loon are crying, while other birds sounds like Tod (n.b. no Frogs live in Iceland).
This is a very quiet nature recording so you should not play it loud. You should play it like you think you will hear it trough open window, as a background sound. Best way to listen details and explore all bird species is using quality open headphones This recording contain also very loud session when all Loons in all ponds in the area “scream” a territory call.
Surprisingly it looks like only one or two motorist is audible in this recording, a truck about 20 km away So the soundscape is almost as nice as it gets on our planet.
There is still many hours left of this recording in Flói. It will be published in coming months.

Friðland í Flóa 2012 – 2. hluti.

Hér er á ferðinni svo til beint framhald af 1. hluta, nema nú hafa hljóðnemarnir verið færðir út að tjörn norðaustur af fuglaskoðunarhúsinu. Upptakan er frá því 25. júní u.þ.b. kl. 3 eftir miðnætti. Heyra má í ýmsum fuglum í dagsins önn. Meðal fugla voru lómur, lóa, hrossagaukur, óðinshani, spói, auðnutittlingur, jaðrakan, stelkur, álft, tjaldur hettumáfur, kría, kjói og sílamáfur. Einhverjar andategundir voru svo á vappi og sveimi um svæðið á meðan á upptöku stóð. Í fjarska heyrist jarm, hundgá, hanagal og hnegg í hestum. Þegar fyrstu sólargeislarnir gægjast yfir Ingólfsfjall og verma svæðið lyftir flugan sér í þykkum sveimum með þéttu suði.
Aldrei þessu vant fer ekki mikið fyrir umferðarhávaða í þessu hljóðskeiði. Greina má þó bíla fara niður Kambana í 20 km fjarlægð. Í raun má greina ferðir þeirra frá Kömbum og fylgja þeim eftir austur fyrir Selfoss á upprunalegu upptökunni og fullum gæðum.
Þetta er lágvær upptaka. Það er því besta að spila hana á lágværum nótum eins og setið sé við opinn glugga. En fyrir þá sem vilja greina fuglategundir og önnur hljóð er mælt með að hlustað sé á upptökuna með góðum opnum heyrnartólum.
Margra klukkutíma efni var tekið upp á þessum stað. Fleiri upptökur munu því heyrast á komandi mánuðum.

Free Pussy Riot

Free Pussy Riot protest

At 17th of August 2012 about 100 protesters gathering together front of Russian embassy in Reykjavik call for free Pussy Riot.
The protest stay in one hour between 10 and 11am (Icelandic time). All the time people call “FREE PUSSY RIOT” so in the end when the lips and tongue get tired it start to sound like “Peoples right”.
Protest like this was held all over the world at same time.
Sadly during the protest three member of the Pussy Riot was doomed to stay in prison for two years.
For all those out of space who do not know Pussy Riot or human rights should search in Google for more information.
Please play this recording loud and share everywhere.  Now people all over world need to scream Pussy riot out of prison.

Frelsið Píku óeirðir

Fólk safnaðist saman framan við rússneska sendiráðið þann 17. ágúst 2012 til að mótmæla klúðurslegum mannréttindabrotum á þremur meðlimum punk hljómsveitarinnar Pussy Riot. Hafði hljómsveitin staðið fyrir því að syngja 40 sekúndna pönkbæn í hofi rússnesku rétttrúnaðarkyrkjunar þar sem María mey var beðin um að losa Rússland við Putin forseta.
Niðurstaðan var sú að þrír hljómsveitameðlimir fengu tveggja ára fangelsi fyrir uppátækið.
Mælst er til að upptakan sé hátt spiluð og henni dreift sem víðast svo meðlimum hljómsveitarinnar verði sleppt sem allra fyrst. Höfum það hugfast að það er litill sem enginn munur á rússneskum eða vestrænum stjórnvöldum. Það er því nauðsynlegt að berjast fyrir mannréttindum allstaðar og á öllum tímum.

Nature reserve in Flói 2012. Part 1

Cloud over nature reseve in Flói

As usual at summer solstance I recorded birds and ambiance in the nature reserve in Flói south of Iceland. Something I hope I will have an opportunity to do in coming years.
All three past years I have got almost the same weather. Variable, but no heavy rain or storm. It has been just perfect for all kinds of ambiance recording. And even though I have put the microphones almost at the same place every time, have I always detected some new sound or soundscape.
This year when I arrived to the bird watching shelter in the nature reserve the wind was too strong. But inside the shelter was a window covered with hundreds of humming gnats.
All batteries were ready for many hours of recording so I push on “Record” and vent out to the moors for sleep. Next three hours the wind slowly goes down.
Following recordings was made between midnight and half past two at 25th of June.
Earlier recording was made between 12 and 1am. Mostly gusts and gnats. Birds are barely audible.
The second recording was made around 2 am. Wind has go down and the birds have start to sing.
N.b. This is indoor recording so all birds sounds strange in this session.
After half past three I move the microphones to the field and start to record the birds in details. That will be publish in some parts in coming moths.

Friðland í Flóa 2012. 1. hluti.

Þriðja sumarið í röð mætti ég í friðland í Flóa til að taka upp fuglalíf og stemmningshljóð. Mætti ég í friðlandið  um miðnætti þann 25. júní . Í fyrstu hentaði veðurlag og fuglalíf  ekki til upptöku. En fremur en að gera ekki neitt kom ég hljóðnemum fyrir innandyra í fuglaskoðunarhúsinu, enda af nægu að taka þar. Sjálfur fór ég út og lagðist til svefns á milli þúfna. Þegar ég vaknaði hafði upptaka staðið yfir í rúma tvo  tíma.
Þau hljóðrit sem hér koma voru tekin úr þessu tímabili með rúmu klukkutíma bili. Það fyrra er tekið upp fyrir klukkan eitt þar sem vindur og mýfluga leika stærstu hlutverkin. Í því síðara sem tekið var upp um klukkan tvö er vind farið að lægja og fuglalíf að færast í aukana.
Athugið að fuglahljóðin eru ekki eðlileg þar sem tekið er upp innandyra. Fuglahljóð berast því öll inn um opna glugga hússins.

Opus for power line, bass, wind and birds.

It is not every day when I am free from traffic noise. But when it happens it is possible to notice other small sounds in the surroundings.
That happened in beginning of June 2012 when I was at Krossholt at Barðastönd, in the northwest of Iceland.
One night someone was playing loud music in the neighborhood. The rumbling bass beat was noticeable all night along. During the night the wind started to blow from east with strong gusts. Suddenly nearby power line started to give a strange sound and the niggling beat from the neighborhood started to be interesting. In combination with the wind, power line, birdsong from the field and nearby cliff it started to be like a music from other planet. In fact it was a really interesting composition. Better than many modern human made compositions today. The intro is more than two minutes long, so just lay back in your chair, relax and listen.
High quality headphones are recommended.

Tónverk fyrir háspennustrengi, bassa, vind og fugla.

Það er ekki á hverjum degi sem maður fær frið frá þrúgandi véladrunum höfuðborgarinnar. En þegar það gerist þá opnast heimur ýmissa annarra hljóða sem venja er að framhjá manni fari. Það gerðist einmitt við Krossholt á Barðaströnd í byrjun júní 2012.
Nótt eina var einhver í nágrenninu að spila tónlist með þungum bassa alla nóttina. Rétt fyrir miðnætti tók vindinn upp og áttin breyttist. Þá gerðist það undraverða. Háspennulína í nágrenninu fór að klappa saman strengjum og gefa frá sér són. Skyndilega breyttust pirrandi taktföstu bassadrunurnar í skemmtilegan og framandi undirleik með strengjaleik háspennulínunnar. Söngur mó- og bjargfugla bættist svo við í bakgrunni eins og til að fullkomna tónverkið. Í fúlustu alvöru, þetta tónverk slær flestu því sem ég hef heyrt í langan tíma. Tónleikarnir stóðu frá kvöldi og langt fram undir morgun með ýmsum blæbrigðum með fjölbreyttu lagavali. Því miður tók ég aðeins upp tvö og hálft tónverk. Er fyrra heila tónverkið að finna hér.
Mælt er með að á þetta sé hlustað með góðum heyrnartólum.

White Wagtail in the wind

White Wagtail

I and my family spent a bank holiday last weekend in May in Union´s vacation house at Apavatn in south Iceland. The weather was typical for spring. Sunny, but cold and windy.
This was not exactly the best weather to record bird song, or “nice spring mood”, but when I placed the microphones not far away from the house, a White Wagtail gave me a nice tweet as a professional singer close to the microphones.
Not far away was a playground with big trampoline. Most of the background sound is the drumming sound from this trampoline, screaming children and waves from the lake. Through the all recording a weak tweet sound is coming from young bird in nearby nest.
In the end of the recording people are gathering together in a hot tub.

Það gustar um Maríuerlu.

Það var um júróvisjonhelgina 2012 sem fjölskyldan fór í orlofshús við Apavatn. Veðrið var ágætt að sunnlenskum hætti. Sól, en fremur svalt og gekk á með norðan rokum.
Mikið var um fólk á svæðinu. Því var umtalsverður skarkali, ekki síst á leiktækjasvæðinu þar sem meðal annars var risavaxið trampólín. Þar hoppuðu börn sem fullorðnir ákafast eins og heyra má í bakgrunni.
Öldur börðu grjótið við vatnið og vindur gnauðaði í trjánum. Við hvert orlofshús var grenitré og virtust fuglar hafa hreiður í þeim öllum. Maríuerla ein var stöðugt á vappi við sólpallinn og góndi reglulega inn um gluggan hjá okkur. Þegar ég svo setti hljóðnemana út fyrir hús gerði hún sér litið fyrir og tísti góða aríu í gegn um rokið.

Skepnurnar í lauginni

Í fjöruborðinu fyrir neðan Europe Villa Cortes GL hótelið á Tenerife er sjávarlaug. Sá ég fáar manneskjur synda í þessari laug. Hún leit því út fyrir að vera frekar líflaus. En þegar betur var að gáð var hún full af lífi. Í lauginni var urmull krabba, snigla og annarra kvikinda sem ég kann lítil deili á.
Síðla dags þann 22. desember 2011, rétt fyrir sólsetur, stakk ég hljóðnemum í laugina og gleymdi mér í rúman klukkutíma við að hlusta á einhver kvikindi gefa frá sér hljóð. Í bland við öldunið og fótatak fólks sem gekk um laugarbakkann mátti heyra ýmis hljóð. Öðru hvoru skvettust öldur inn í laugina en háværastir voru líklega sniglar sem nörtuðu botn og veggi laugarinnar í ætisleit.

Creatures in the pool

In the beach below the Hotel “Europe Villa Cortes GL” at Tenerife is a sea pool. It was probably build some years ago for people to swim, but today it is full of all kinds of algae, snails, crabs and other creatures, so it looks not popular for humans.
In the afternoon at 22 of December 2011, I put hydrophone in the pool and recorded more than one hour of mystique sound. Most audible sound are rumbling sound from the surf. Sometimes the waves goes all the way in the pool with splashing sound and sometimes footsteps can be heard when people walk by the pool side. But there is also many other sounds from organic creatures, most likely from hungry snails scratching the pool surface.

Í tveimur heimum

Reykjavíkurtjörn

Í vetur bárust landsmönnum þær döpru fréttir að fuglalífi við Reykjavíkurtjörn hefði hrakað mikið síðustu ár. Það leiddi huga minn að því að ég ætti sama sem engin hljóðrit af fuglalífi við Tjörnina. En einhvers staðar á ég þó upptöku sem ég tók upp framan við Iðnó fyrir 30 árum.
Yfirþyrmandi umferðarniður hefur annars valdið því að ég hef ekki lagt það í vana minn að eltast við náttúruhljóð í miðbæ Reykjavíkur.
Framvegis skal verða breyting á, því spennandi verður að sjá hvort mönnum takist að endurheimta þá fugla sem verptu og komu upp ungum við Tjörnina um miðja síðustu öld .
Tvær helgar í janúar gerði ágæis veður. Arkaði ég með upptökutækin niður að Reykjavíkurtjörn sem var ísilögð. Stóð allt eins til að hljóðrita brak og bresti í ísnum, en ég komst fljótt að því að hann var ekki nógu kaldur, of mikill snjór á honum og að vanda of mikill umferðahávaði.
Fuglalífið varð því aðal viðfangsefnið þessar tvær helgar. Ákvað ég að staðsetja tækin á göngubrúnni frá Iðnó að Ráðhúsinu. Tveimur vatnahljóðnemum var stungið í Tjörnina u.þ.b. 20sm fyrir ofan botn með tveggja metra millibili. Fyrir ofan, á brúnni, voru hljóðnemar í XY uppsetningu.
Þarna má heyra hundgá, í fólki gefa öndum brauð og í útlendum ferðamönnum.
Undir yfirborði tjarnarinnar heyrast mikil skvamphljóð frá fuglum sem börðust um brauðið á yfirborðinu, einnig í skúfönd sem oftsinnis kafaði nærri hljóðnemunum. Þá heyrist málmhljóð þegar gengið er á brúnni og eitthvað slæst í burðarvirki hennar.

In two worlds

In Reykjavik center is a quiet big pond or a lake with many bird species, like Swans, Gooses and Ducks. Often people feed this birds with bread so outburst is normal when birds grasp the breadcrumbs.
This recordings was made simultaneously both above and under water on four tracks. Two hydrophones where placed 2 meters apart and 20 cm above the pond bottom. On the steel bridge above was two cardioid in XY setup.
