Black legged Kittiwake at Arnarstapi

Arnarstapi

In middle of July my family went in a five days trip around Snæfellsnes peninsula. Of course my recorder follow me as a puppy and I recorded as much as I could days and nights. One of this recordings I made was above a cliff score near Arnarstapi.
The weather was very nice, sunny but a breeze from north-vest so it was calm in the cliffs south of Arnarstapi.
I expanded my boom over the cliff brink and located the microphone in a calm place.
And…. WOW! I got really beautiful ambiance. About 15-20 meters below, the sea wave smoothly stroke the cliffs. Whine black legged Kittiwake flew all around and the cliffs were full of the their tweedy baby’s.
During one hour recording I was totally raped on the cliff edge in this beautiful ambiance.
Close by in next score,  fishermens were working at the dock and some tourist walked by behind me.

Rita við Arnarstapa

Um miðjan júlí 2012 fór fjölskyldan í fimm daga ferðalag umhverfis Snæfellsnes. Eins og venja var fylgdi upptökutækið með við hvert fótmál.
Skemmtilegasta hljóðritið sem ég náði í þessari ferð var við Arnarstapa. Ekki að furða því þar er af nægu að taka. Hefði ég getað verið þar við hljóðritanir í marga daga.
Sunnan við löndunarbryggjuna er lítil klettaskora sem gefur skemmtilegan endurhljóm. Teygði ég þar hljóðnemann fram yfir klettabrúnina. Opnaðist þá afar skemmtilegur hljóðheimur sem varð til þess að ég steingleymdi mér í um klukkutíma án þess að hreyfa legg eða lið.
Allt um kring flaug rita vælandi í dagsins önn og á klettasillum mátti sjá og heyra að mikið var af ungum. Fyrir neðan hjalaði svo aldan blíðlega við klettana.
Í bakgrunni má hyra í erlendum ferðamönnum staldra við, spjalla og taka myndir. Þá heyrist einnig umgangur frá bryggjunni þar sem verið var að landa afla og eitthvað í þotuumferð.

Starling traffic

Starling Starri

It has been my work passing weekends recording birds and other sounds in my garden. Sometimes I am just testing microphones, microphones’ setups, wind protections or batteries. Sometimes I am just hoping to get something unusual, car crash in the neighborhood, earthquake or just something nice and interesting.
This recordings could be many hours long. Then usually this recordings go through different audio software and spectrum analyzer. If nothing interesting is found then most of the files are deleted. Most of them are just traffic noises.
I am used to feed birds in my garden so they are an ideal sound source and the following recording is one of this feeding day in November.
After almost four hours recordings a very big group of Starlings visited my garden. They fly and walk around the microphones. A raven was not far away and frightened most of the starlings when he flew close by.
For many reasons this is a nice recording, but for one reason I was not satisfied with the result.
I will let the listeners to find out what it is and discuss it and response. I will give my answer before Xmas.

Umferð starra

Ég hef gert mikið af því undanfarnar helgar að taka upp umhverfishljóð úti í garði. Oft er ég að prófa hljóðnema, hljóðnemauppsetningar, vindhlífar eða rafhlöður. Oftar en ekki eru spörfuglar sem ég fóðra úti í garði viðfangsefnið þó ég láti mig alltaf dreyma um hið óvænta. Þessar upptökur geta verið margra klukkustunda langar og fátt annað á þeim en hávaðasöm bílaumferð. En áður en upptökunum er hent er þeim rennt í gegnum forrit sem sýna í fljótheitum hvort eitthvað áhugavert sé á þeim að finna. Ef svo er þá er það geymt.
Hér er á ferðinni eins slík upptaka. Eftir nærri fjögurra klukkustunda upptöku kom stór starrahópur í fóðrið sem lagt hafði verið fyrir þá.
Þarna spígspora og flögra fuglarnir umhverfis hljóðnemana, en stór hópur þeirra er uppi í trjánum. Hrafn er í hverfinu og fær hund til að gelta og hræðir síðan fuglana þegar hann flýgur of nærri.
Þetta er að mörgu leyti lífleg og skemmtileg upptaka. En það var eitt atriði sem varð til þess að ég var nærri búinn að henda þessari upptöku.
Ég ætla ekki að segja hvað það er, en ætla að lát hlustendum eftir að dæma upptökuna og segja frá því hvað hafi hugsanlega misfarist og fá þá til að rita ummæli hér fyrir neðan. Ég mun svo segja hvað mér finnst fyrir jól.

Óðinshani

This recording was captured around 4:00 to 5:00 am, 25th of June.
It is almost straight continue of part 3 with very quiet relaxing midsummer sound scape but now disturbed with two airplanes passing by from east to west. It was just the beginning of a heavy airplane traffic later this morning. During calm moments thick clouds of gnats filled the air with heavy buzzing noise, but they got suddenly quiet every time when the light gusts stroke the field.
Quality headphone recommended.

Friðland í Flóa 2012 – 4. hluti

Hér er framhald af fyrri upptökum úr friðlandi í Flóa 2012. Þessar upptökur er frá u.þ.b. kl 4:00 til 5:00, að morgni 25 júní. Hér má heyra í fuglum s.s. óðinshana, hrossagauk, stelk, lómi, spóa, kríu, hettumáfi, músarindli og maríuerlu sem og mörgum öðrum fuglum.
Nú fer flugumferð að hefjast af alvöru. Tvær millilandaþotur rjúfa þögnina í þessu hljóðriti. Er það aðeins smjörþefur af því sem síðar kom og sett verður á vefinn síðar.
Hlustist með góðum heyrnartólum.

Nature reserve in Flói 2012. Part 3

Flói

Recordings from Flói nature reserve continues. This two recordings were captured around 3:30 and 4:00 am, 25th of June.
The first recording contains mostly far distance sounds, a quiet relaxing midsummer sound scape. Birds are living their life, flying around and searching for food. Gusts sometimes disturb the recording with rumble sound .
The second recording was recorded around 4 am. It contains the first of many jet flights this morning from Europe to America. Morning sunbeams are now really going to heat the field so clouds of gnats are even thicker than before. A duck with youngsters are pushing their body through rushy field searching for food around the microphone.
Both this recordings are worth to played as a background sound at home or work.

Friðland í Flóa 2012 – 3. hluti

Hér er framhald af fyrri upptökum úr friðlandi í Fóa 2012. Þessar upptökur er frá u.þ.b. kl 3:30 til 4:00, að morgni 25 júní.
Fyrri upptakan inniheldur fremur þögula hljóðmynd af fuglalífi svæðisins. Heyra má þó í óðinshana busla í nálægri tjörn og stöku sinnum stingur kría sér í tjörnina í fæðuleit. Vindkviður eiga það svo til að trufla upptökuna.
Í seinni upptökunni má heyra í fyrstu þotunni þennan morguninn fljúga milli Evrópu og Ameríku. Sólargeislar brjótast nú í gegnum skýin yfir Ingólfsfjalli og verma svæðið. Þegar vind svo lægir þá lyftir flugan sér í þéttum skýsveipum og með miklu suði. Önd með unga kjagar með unga sína í þéttu mýrargrasinu umhverfis hljóðnemana í fæðuleit.
Báðar upptökurnar njóta sín best sem bakgrunnshljóð heima við eða á vinnustað.

Nature reserve Floi

This recording is almost a straight continue from “Nature reserve in Flói 2012 – Part 1” that was recorded inside the bird watching shelter. Now the microphones are in the wetland, about 300 meters from the shelter. This is close to a pond, early morning 25th of June, around 3am. Now and then the gust strokes the field, but later one it gets more quiet.
This was a busy time for all residents in the area so the recording contains a lot of their activity.
Birds searching for food in the pound or in the grass around the microphones, like Red- necked Phalarope, Arctic stern, Red throat Loon and some ducks. Birds pass by with wing flaps. There is also a lonely barking dog, bleating sheep and whinny horses somewhere far away.
When morning sunbeams warm the field and the wind goes calm, billions of gnats start to fly in thick clouds up and down with impressive noise. Many other bird species are audible in this recording like Common Snipe, Golden Ploer, Whimbrel, Gull, Rooster and many other birds I can not named like some young birds. Sometimes young Loon are crying, while other birds sounds like Tod (n.b. no Frogs live in Iceland).
This is a very quiet nature recording so you should not play it loud. You should play it like you think you will hear it trough open window, as a background sound. Best way to listen details and explore all bird species is using quality open headphones This recording contain also very loud session when all Loons in all ponds in the area “scream” a territory call.
Surprisingly it looks like only one or two motorist is audible in this recording, a truck about 20 km away So the soundscape is almost as nice as it gets on our planet.
There is still many hours left of this recording in Flói. It will be published in coming months.

Friðland í Flóa 2012 – 2. hluti.

Hér er á ferðinni svo til beint framhald af 1. hluta, nema nú hafa hljóðnemarnir verið færðir út að tjörn norðaustur af fuglaskoðunarhúsinu. Upptakan er frá því 25. júní u.þ.b. kl. 3 eftir miðnætti. Heyra má í ýmsum fuglum í dagsins önn. Meðal fugla voru lómur, lóa, hrossagaukur, óðinshani, spói, auðnutittlingur, jaðrakan, stelkur, álft, tjaldur hettumáfur, kría, kjói og sílamáfur. Einhverjar andategundir voru svo á vappi og sveimi um svæðið á meðan á upptöku stóð. Í fjarska heyrist jarm, hundgá, hanagal og hnegg í hestum. Þegar fyrstu sólargeislarnir gægjast yfir Ingólfsfjall og verma svæðið lyftir flugan sér í þykkum sveimum með þéttu suði.
Aldrei þessu vant fer ekki mikið fyrir umferðarhávaða í þessu hljóðskeiði. Greina má þó bíla fara niður Kambana í 20 km fjarlægð. Í raun má greina ferðir þeirra frá Kömbum og fylgja þeim eftir austur fyrir Selfoss á upprunalegu upptökunni og fullum gæðum.
Þetta er lágvær upptaka. Það er því besta að spila hana á lágværum nótum eins og setið sé við opinn glugga. En fyrir þá sem vilja greina fuglategundir og önnur hljóð er mælt með að hlustað sé á upptökuna með góðum opnum heyrnartólum.
Margra klukkutíma efni var tekið upp á þessum stað. Fleiri upptökur munu því heyrast á komandi mánuðum.

Nature reserve in Flói 2012. Part 1

Cloud over nature reseve in Flói

As usual at summer solstance I recorded birds and ambiance in the nature reserve in Flói south of Iceland. Something I hope I will have an opportunity to do in coming years.
All three past years I have got almost the same weather. Variable, but no heavy rain or storm. It has been just perfect for all kinds of ambiance recording. And even though I have put the microphones almost at the same place every time, have I always detected some new sound or soundscape.
This year when I arrived to the bird watching shelter in the nature reserve the wind was too strong. But inside the shelter was a window covered with hundreds of humming gnats.
All batteries were ready for many hours of recording so I push on “Record” and vent out to the moors for sleep. Next three hours the wind slowly goes down.
Following recordings was made between midnight and half past two at 25th of June.
Earlier recording was made between 12 and 1am. Mostly gusts and gnats. Birds are barely audible.
The second recording was made around 2 am. Wind has go down and the birds have start to sing.
N.b. This is indoor recording so all birds sounds strange in this session.
After half past three I move the microphones to the field and start to record the birds in details. That will be publish in some parts in coming moths.

Friðland í Flóa 2012. 1. hluti.

Þriðja sumarið í röð mætti ég í friðland í Flóa til að taka upp fuglalíf og stemmningshljóð. Mætti ég í friðlandið  um miðnætti þann 25. júní . Í fyrstu hentaði veðurlag og fuglalíf  ekki til upptöku. En fremur en að gera ekki neitt kom ég hljóðnemum fyrir innandyra í fuglaskoðunarhúsinu, enda af nægu að taka þar. Sjálfur fór ég út og lagðist til svefns á milli þúfna. Þegar ég vaknaði hafði upptaka staðið yfir í rúma tvo  tíma.
Þau hljóðrit sem hér koma voru tekin úr þessu tímabili með rúmu klukkutíma bili. Það fyrra er tekið upp fyrir klukkan eitt þar sem vindur og mýfluga leika stærstu hlutverkin. Í því síðara sem tekið var upp um klukkan tvö er vind farið að lægja og fuglalíf að færast í aukana.
Athugið að fuglahljóðin eru ekki eðlileg þar sem tekið er upp innandyra. Fuglahljóð berast því öll inn um opna glugga hússins.

Sound in Víðgelmir Cave

Víðgelmir

Víðgelmir is a lava tube situated in Western Iceland in the Hallmundarhraun lava field, ca. 2 km. Southeast from Fljótstunga farm in Hvítársíða, Borgarfjörður. The roof of the lava tube has collapsed, creating two large openings near its north end which are the only known entrances. Viðgelmir is 1585m long, the largest part of the cave passage is 15.8m high and 16.5m wide making it by far the largest of its kind in Iceland. The cave has a wide entrance but narrows down in some places. An iron gate was installed at the first constriction in 1994 to preserve the delicate lava formations or speleothems which haven’t already been destroyed. Evidence of human habitation, probably dating to the Viking age, has been discovered in the cave and is preserved in the National Museum of Iceland. Long stretches of the cave floor are very rough and shouldn’t be navigated without a guide. Access and guided tours are provided at nearby Fljótstunga.
Lava tube caves are formed when a low-viscosity lava flow develops a continuous and hard crust which thickens and forms a roof above the molten lava stream. When the eruption subsides, the still molten lava moving beneath the crust will continue to drain downhill, leaving an open lava tube cave. Many other lava tube caves have been discovered in Hallmundarhraun (formed around 900 AD), most notable Surtshellir and Stefánshellir.(*)
This recording was made 30th of June 2012, close to the entrance, where ice from last winter was still melting. Water drops from the cave roof are falling into differenet places on the floor, in holes in the ice and on stones on rough surfaced floor.
Deeper in the cave there is no dripping water so it is completely quiet. For most people it could be an interesting experience. During the summer people can have guided tour in Viðgelmir, just contact Fljótstunga farm.

Hljóðin í Víðgelmi í Hallmundarhrauni

Víðgelmir er einn af lengstu (1.585 m) hellum landsins og rúmtaksmestu (148.000 m³) hraunhellum heims. Hann er í Hallmundarhrauni, u.þ.b. 2 km suðaustur af Fljótstungu í Hvítársíðu. Þak hellisins hefur hrunið á allstórum kafla, nærri norðurenda hans, og er það eini inngangurinn. Hellirinn er víður fremst en þrengist á köflum þegar innar dregur. Þar var, í október árið 1991 sett upp járnhlið af félagsmönnum í Hellarannsóknafélagi Íslands til að vernda þær dropasteinsmyndanir sem ekki hafa þegar verið eyðilagðar. Mannvistarleifar sem fundust í hellinum eru varðveittar í Þjóðminjasafninu og eru að líkindum frá víkingaöld. Hellirinn er á köflum afar erfiður yfirferðar og tæpast ráðlegt að fara um hann nema með leiðsögumanni. Leiðsögn og aðgangur að innri hluta hellisins er fáanleg frá Fljótstungu.
Hellirinn var lokaður af ís frá árinu 1918 til ársins 1930 en hann lokaðist aftur um veturinn 1972-1973. Í apríl 1990 fór hópur á vegum Hellarannsóknafélags Íslands með tól og tæki og freistaði þess að opna hellinn. Ekki tókst það að þessu sinni en árið eftir tóku nokkrir heimamenn af bæjum í Hvítársíðu og Hálsasveit sig saman, undir forystu Kristleifs Þorsteinssonar bónda í Húsafelli og kláruðu verkið (*)

White Wagtail in the wind

White Wagtail

I and my family spent a bank holiday last weekend in May in Union´s vacation house at Apavatn in south Iceland. The weather was typical for spring. Sunny, but cold and windy.
This was not exactly the best weather to record bird song, or “nice spring mood”, but when I placed the microphones not far away from the house, a White Wagtail gave me a nice tweet as a professional singer close to the microphones.
Not far away was a playground with big trampoline. Most of the background sound is the drumming sound from this trampoline, screaming children and waves from the lake. Through the all recording a weak tweet sound is coming from young bird in nearby nest.
In the end of the recording people are gathering together in a hot tub.

Það gustar um Maríuerlu.

Það var um júróvisjonhelgina 2012 sem fjölskyldan fór í orlofshús við Apavatn. Veðrið var ágætt að sunnlenskum hætti. Sól, en fremur svalt og gekk á með norðan rokum.
Mikið var um fólk á svæðinu. Því var umtalsverður skarkali, ekki síst á leiktækjasvæðinu þar sem meðal annars var risavaxið trampólín. Þar hoppuðu börn sem fullorðnir ákafast eins og heyra má í bakgrunni.
Öldur börðu grjótið við vatnið og vindur gnauðaði í trjánum. Við hvert orlofshús var grenitré og virtust fuglar hafa hreiður í þeim öllum. Maríuerla ein var stöðugt á vappi við sólpallinn og góndi reglulega inn um gluggan hjá okkur. Þegar ég svo setti hljóðnemana út fyrir hús gerði hún sér litið fyrir og tísti góða aríu í gegn um rokið.

Skepnurnar í lauginni

Í fjöruborðinu fyrir neðan Europe Villa Cortes GL hótelið á Tenerife er sjávarlaug. Sá ég fáar manneskjur synda í þessari laug. Hún leit því út fyrir að vera frekar líflaus. En þegar betur var að gáð var hún full af lífi. Í lauginni var urmull krabba, snigla og annarra kvikinda sem ég kann lítil deili á.
Síðla dags þann 22. desember 2011, rétt fyrir sólsetur, stakk ég hljóðnemum í laugina og gleymdi mér í rúman klukkutíma við að hlusta á einhver kvikindi gefa frá sér hljóð. Í bland við öldunið og fótatak fólks sem gekk um laugarbakkann mátti heyra ýmis hljóð. Öðru hvoru skvettust öldur inn í laugina en háværastir voru líklega sniglar sem nörtuðu botn og veggi laugarinnar í ætisleit.

Creatures in the pool

In the beach below the Hotel “Europe Villa Cortes GL” at Tenerife is a sea pool. It was probably build some years ago for people to swim, but today it is full of all kinds of algae, snails, crabs and other creatures, so it looks not popular for humans.
In the afternoon at 22 of December 2011, I put hydrophone in the pool and recorded more than one hour of mystique sound. Most audible sound are rumbling sound from the surf. Sometimes the waves goes all the way in the pool with splashing sound and sometimes footsteps can be heard when people walk by the pool side. But there is also many other sounds from organic creatures, most likely from hungry snails scratching the pool surface.

Jarðskjálftinn við Seltúnshver

Hér er á ferð samantekt af fimm hljóðritum sem tekin voru upp 3. apríl 2011 þegar ég og vinnufélagi minn Haukur Guðmundsson fórum dagsferð um Reykjanesið.
Byrjað var á því að fara að Kleifarvatni þar sem farið var að hverum sem komu upp á yfirborðið eftir jarðskjálftana árið 2000 þegar lækkaði skyndilega í vatninu. Ekki var þorandi að fara mjög nærri, því allt eins var víst að maður stigi fætinum í sjóðandi sandpytt.
Hljóðritið byrjar á þessum hver. Eftir það eru tvo hljóðrit frá Seltúnhverum. Við eftirvinnslu þeirra hljóðrita kom í ljós að önnur upptakan skilaði einhverjum titringi inn á hljóðritið sem erfitt var að skilja nema um jarðskjálfta hafi verið að ræða. Titringur þessi var á u.þ.b. 10 riðum. Ekki er vitað á hvaða styrk en væntanlega undir 3 á Richter.
Frá Seltúnshverum lá leiðinn eftir Suðurstarandavegi um Grindavík vestur að Gunnuhver sem fyrir okkur báðum var orðin ógnvænleg hrollvekja. Hvorugur okkar hafði farið þessa leið í langan tíma, en báðir mundum við eftir þessum hver sem litlu svæði sem gufa lagði upp frá. Nú var þetta orðið gríðar stórt svæði þar sem allt sauð og blés eins og í helvíti á jörð, gersamlega óþekkjanlegt. Það er ekki að furða þó jarðfræðingar séu á tánum yfir þessu skrímsli sem Gunnuhver er orðinn í dag. Myndavélin varð óvirk í eiturgufunum og ég var logandi hræddur um að þvælast með upptökutækin í þessum ætandi gufum. Aðeins ein upptaka náðist af þessum stað þar sem hljóðnemum var vísað í holu í útjaðri hverasvæðisins. Er það fjórði hverinn í hljóðritinu .
Frá Gunnuhver lá leiðin að framhjá Reykjanesvita niður í fjöru við Valahnjúka þar sem síðasta hljóðritið var tekið upp.

Earthquake at Seltúnshver (Geothermal area)

It was in the beginning of mars, earthquake hit my house.
Almost nonstop earthquakes shakes landscapes south and east of Reykjavik capital so I was sure my recorder had picked up some earthquakes previous years. I searched in my mind where it was most likely it could have happened. After some research I found one, in almost forgotten recording. It was recorded in april 2011, when I and my pal at work went a day trip to Reykjanes peninsula. Reykjanes is very well known for earthquakes and geothermal activity. The main reason for this trip was to look at the changes of some geothermal area because of increasing activity last decade. As usual, my recorders followed me in this trip, but I was not satisfied with these recordings…until now.
Hereby I mix together five of these recordings as a travel log for this day trip.
First one is a hot spring that for centuries has been under water in Kleifarvatn Lake until the lake started to shrink after big earthquake at the year 2000.
The second one is also a hot spring recording but it contains the earthquake at very low frequency (10Hz). The third one is another hot springs close by, but with different mics and they did not detect earthquake as clearly. Both this recordings are recoded at Seltúnshver (Seltúns-hver=Seltuns-hotspring).
The fourth one was recorded at Gunnuhver close to Reykjanesvirkjun, a power plant that has changes a lot the geothermal activity on Reykjanes peninsula.
The fifth recording is waves of Atlantic Ocean hammering the cliffs at Reykanestá.
